I have always been health conscious and fit. Currently I am enjoying all the wonderful benefits of my strict Paleo eating style. In my world, I’ve been a yoga practitioner and teacher for over 22 years, am the Astros yoga teacher, lover, owner and ‘listener’ of horses for 35 years and creator and facilitator of workshops and retreats for the mutual exploration and healing of horses and humans.
In my world I had no vocabulary that included the word ‘Ironman’.
When my sister Caitlin and her fiancé, Tiffany went to Kona, Hawaii to volunteer for the Ironman finals in 2014, (and to get married), I thought people who did that kind of thing were crazy. Didn’t people die doing that kind of thing?
When they returned home, I watched the recap video they insisted I view … and I admit, something happened … it captured me.
The icing on the cake was to actually be part of the support team to Caitlin and Tiffany on the day of their own Ironman competition in The Woodlands last May of 2015. Witnessing them cross the finish line in 15 hours and 11 minutes; feeling the inspiration, pounding of my heart and my own raw emotion at hearing them being called, ‘Ironman’ … I started to wonder, ‘Could I be an Ironman too?’
Listed below is what will be expected of me in an Ironman race and my corresponding experience:
- Swim 2.4 miles ~ When I was in grade school I splashed around with the neighborhood kids in the pool. Dog paddle is my specialty.
- Bike 112 miles ~ My Dad bought me a pink Schwinn bike with tassels on the handlebars when I was 6 years old.
- Run 26.2 miles ~ I have 2 half-marathons under my belt.
All to be finished in under 17 hours. So me? A yoga teacher and horse listener … an Ironman? Am I the kind of person who can cross that finish line? I do not know. But what I do know is this: I am NOT the kind of person who can sit back and wonder if I could.
Is the Light Rider an Ironman too?
With hard core commitment, a heart the size of a Triple Crown winner and all the guts I’ve got; under the watchful eyes of my dedicated coaches whom I love dearly, my sister Caitlin and sister-in-love Tiffany, who inspired me to attempt to be one of ‘those crazy people’, come May 2016, we will all find out.
